Don't get me wrong I am still very excited about the Animated Dragonlance movie, but I just found out that Fantasy Flight Games is making a "live action" movie based on their RPG called Midnight. I am a big fan of Fantasy Flight, at least their board games, I've never touched their RPG stuff. I wish them success with this movie and I think that Dragonlance fans would be well served if this movie does well, but I just don't understand why we Dragonlance fans have to wait over 20 years for a movie and then we only get an animated one, while a realatively new, and less known fantasy world like Midnight gets a full on "real" movie. Maybe I'm outta touch, but I think that Dragonlance has a larger fan base than something like Midnight. But perhaps Dragonlance is not as popular as I think, everytime I go to the bookstore the Dragonlance Section gets smaller and smaller despite all the new books.

I have seen the trailer to Fantasy Flight and it looks really low budget, hence why it is easy for them to make, personally i never heard of it till now,and as for popularity of DL it's due to the fact there wasn't much going on with it for many years except for the novels, when i heard they were making a D&D online game i was hoping it was going to be DL but alas it would seem that someone else held the license and they did nothing with it and they used a newly created world much to my disappointment, last thing i remember they did anything with the DL license was SSI's Goldbox computer RPG's which i own even to this day. and if anyone is interested i do think most of them are now considered abandonware(free to download).

i rather see a better quality animation version then what they are doing with Fantasy Flight which looks like crap, besides nothing less then what was used to make the LOTR series production would do DL justice,so unless that is the case ill take an animated version so long as they hold true to the books and not try to fix it

hmm... i didn't think the trailer was that bad. cretainly no LOTR, looked kinda like a tv movie, or straight to video. it did look kinda low budget, but just the fact that their making fantasy movies of any budget is a good thing. we just won't get much quality fantasy.

i know nothing about the game this trailer is based on, so i'm not that excited for it. but i would watch it.

and i read these things on their site:

quote:
Thank you for visiting the website dedicated to MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES, the independent fantasy film that is being produced by Landroval Studios, the media production division of Fantasy Flight Games (FFG).

quote:
Even at its best, independent film is an expensive and risky endeavor, and an independent fantasy film especially so. If you are interested in MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES and in supporting our efforts, the best way to do so before the release of the movie is to purchase the MIDNIGHT roleplaying game books, in which you will find a wealth of information about the MIDNIGHT world, its history, and its denizens. We thank you for your support.

the game company used their own money and created their own production company to make this "Midnight Chronicles" movie. that's why it looks low budget. hell, in that second paragraph, they're essentially asking people to go buy stuff so they can keep making it. that's why it's live action - they're doing it themselves. TSR, WotC, Weis & Hickman... none of them have production companies for making movies, so they sold the rights to make the movie since they couldn't do it.

that's why we have an animated, not live-action.

believe me, if someone had enough money, and was willing to throw it at DL, they would halt production and move to a live-action format. Disney just did it - they had been working on Toy Story 3 for quite some time, without Pixar's involvement. Then Disney bought Pixar, put the Pixar guys in charge of all animation, and the first thing they did was stop production on TS3. everything done up to that point was trashed.

I admit the trailer for Midnight doesn't make the movie look fantastic, but I have to say when I heard it was an independent film I expected much worse, but this is only a tralier. It is very possible that the movie will not be good. I have more faith in the Dragonlance Animated movie than the "real" Midnight Movie. I guess I was just shocked to see a small game company take on such a diffecult task of making a live action movie. Now WOTC/Hasbro is a much bigger game company and it's irritating that they would never take such a risk to give us a live action Dragonlance Movie.

Oh I have been meaning to ask, this is off topic, sorry, but is the Dragonlance movie gonna be in theatres or will it be a straight to video realease?

From what we have been lead to believe it's being made for theatres release, and my thinking it would be best they did just that with a huge marketing push behind it,so it get everyone's attention even those whom never heard of DL at the very least get their kids excited about it there's huge profits to be made from the kids alone being they automatically count as 2 ticket sales being they have to be escorted with a parent, i can see it now action figures\costumes\posters\etc.

but in order to achieve all this they need the right marketing plan with big budget, lets hope they have really put as much thought in planning their budget on on marketing it as they do in making the movie. If all goes well a live-action movie wouldn't be far behind.

They should change the name of this website to the offical Dragonlance cartoon. Because the project currently in production is NOT the Dragonlance movie.

The Ultimate Avengers animated movie was a "straight to DVD." The sales were successful enough to get a sequel and now, only about four years after the first Ulitmate Avengers there is reports that a big budget live action movie is in pre-production.

I am confident that all you Lancers will get a big Live action DL movie with in the next 6 to 8 years. but only if the sales of the DL cartoon (available next year on DVD at all good retail chains) are big profits.

So start saving up your money, line the proudcers pockets with lots of cash by buying a copy of the DL cartoon for yourself, for your brother and sister as christmas present. Hell, buy a copy for your neighbour.

But be warned. If you and anyone you know uses Bit Torrent or what ever to download a pirate copy of the cartoon from off the web than you may as well kiss the DOWN cartoon or any future DL live action movies good-bye. You have been warned.

As always Hype, i agree with you, it's not that bad, it looks like video, probably HD. The costumes are good the actors too, the art direction is a little cheezy but at least it's fantasy. And we don't get much of that on the big screen.....

Hmm, maybe if we could get Tass to sneak the Chronicles and Twins series into Peter Jackson's "next to read" books we might have something?!
