*Positions soap box in front of crowd, padding the floor around for an inevitable fall*

Hi all. Please have a seat and get comfy, this might take a minute. Most of you haven't known me very long so it might come as a shock to you, but I have a tendancy of taking on projects that are WAY too big for me. "Biting off more than I can chew" so to speak. As a Kender, that's really not too difficult, most projects are bigger than I am. I also have a tendancy of getting my fellow companions knee deep in Baaz gunk as well. (no, really it's true. They like to pretend otherwise, but I know it is my fault.) I can't help it, I see something that needs to be fixed, and I feel this unrelenting urge to dive in and see what I can do to help. (My mother said I should have been a gnome, but I think she was teasing.)

Without dragging this on too long, here's the problem I see, compiled with a little thread consolidation -

I reall don't understand the way they are doing the advertising for the film. It's like they don't want people to talk about it outside the conventions and people that are avid fans of Role playing games and such.I mean if i was to distribute this kind of film, i wouldn't limit this to conventions. I know they don't want to spend much money on advertising and are counting on the word to mouth, but man, they could do more just by providing a little more info on IMDB or spreading the word on a larger scale, that way the word to mouth would be so much more efficient.

The problem is that they do NOT seem to be making the effort needed to make this movie a hit with the non DL-fan audience so that it is possible to produce sequals.
I keep hearing from MW and her production staff that everything depends on the success of this movie, but the proper actions to make this movie a success are not being taken.
Why in the world is the trailor ONLY being released at a convention? Why aren't they trying to get into mas-marketing promotions at fastfood restaurants and so forth?
If you are hoping that something will turn out a success, you can't just throw something out there with a medium amount of effort and then cross your fingers and hope for the best.

We shouldn't strive to merely be happy with what we have. We should be given a product that stokes our passions, and makes us want to see this movie.

For their own good, why aren't the producers promoting this more?

Why aren't we?

What would have happened if Tanis sat back and waited for the authorities at the Inn of the Last Home? Turned over the staff and said, "not my problem". Instead of arguing over what we would have done differently, why not open our eyes and realize that there still is time to save what we have left. Granted, we have no say in the voices, animation, or distribution style of this movie, but what we do have is something that everyone here seems to like to use - our voices!

Are we not "The Official Source of Dragonlance Movie News"? They want word of mouth - Who better to give it than the undying fans??

As of today, I am launching an advertising campaign to promote the arrival of the Dragonlance Movie. With that said, I am personally taking full and unconditional responsibility for this campaign against any flack brought on by WoTC, MW or any "official" Dragonlance representatives. I could use any and all help in this endeavor - if the thought of getting your hands dirty doesn't bother you!

Who wants to stop griping about the way things are handled at corporate?

Who wants to see this project become something better than it appears right now?

Who want's to say that they had a hand in making Dragons of Autumn Twilight a success?

Who is with me?!

Here's what I need......

1) I need someone who is graphic savvy to whip up a professional looking universal poster concept. The image has to include the full working title of the film, proposed release date (Autumn, 2007) and this website for more information. By the end of the month, I want this poster visable to thousands of people on three continents!

2) I need local representatives here in the USA - I will gladly accept the central region (Montana, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming). What about east and west coasts??

3) I need representatives in various regions all over the world. I know we have Aussie, Brit, and Canadian cousins out there - who wants to step up and spread the word in your part of the globe?

4) I need a serious presence on the Net. This site is great, if you know what you're looking for. Otherwise, meh.... We need to hit blogs, web journals, gaming sites, web rings. DO NOT SPAM! Use your resources. If you have a friend with a webcomic, bribe him with Mt. Dew to throw our banner up for a couple months. If you don't have any, make new contacts.

5) I need people to devote brilliant minds and creative thinking to find cheap and effective ways of gettting the news out to the general public. Corp America has their hands deep in X-Cons. We need to target everyone else on the planet. Being an animated PG-13 film, our target audience is most likely college level students. Lets start there....College campus. Game, comic and hobby stores. Internet Cafe's. Anywhere we can find large groups of people who might be interested.

Every little bit helps. If this series means so much to each and every one of you - Be a part of it! We are no longer "fans". Fans wait in line at the book store the night before to get their latest copy. That's child's play compared to what we have already been through!! We are the next generation of loyalists and it's time we step up and take some responsibility. Let's work together to make everyone's dream a reality.....

*carefully steps from soap box, kindly offering it to the now waiting line of rebuttals.*

I think we've all be talking about the movie, but the problem is this: Why they hell should we, if we feel the movie looks like goblin poop after eating rancid stew?

Why should we waste our time with what little we've been given? Granted, I am hoping the movie is good, because it only paves the way for a live action movie, but after seeing some of the crap I've seen, I can name at least a dozen cartoons from the 70's and 80's that look better.

If you want to go on and do an unpaid promotion of this movie, and have it turn out like crap, go for it. Me, I'll be waiting to see more reason to do so. A little bit of promoting from the fans isn't enough to have things sent back to the drawing board at this point. If it's crap, it's crap. If it's good, it's good. It's only a matter of time before we find out which.

well Renden i think ur right about(oh gee i dont even know who has the rights to the movie)anyway whoevers making it isnt doing much to promote their movie.i dunno if promoting the movie over the web would get a lot of ppl interested in it.but as Met says advertising isnt gonna help much if the movie turns out to be a flop.

I agree Renden, we should get together and try to promote this movie to the best of our ability, or else the idea of a live action DragonLance movie will be nothing more than a pipe dream. All Paramount cares about is how much money they'll make from the movie, and if we, the diehard fans, are too busy bashing the movie based on snippets of info, and a few cut scenes here and there, then we have doomed this movie to fail before it's even released.

Now I'm going on my honeymoon this weekend but after we return, I can get started on coming up with a promo poster. I have a BFA in Studio Arts at Texas State, and I'm working on my MS in Historic Preservation at the Art Institute of Chicago (for anyone interested in my credentials). I'm also willing to spread the word here in Chicagoland to the best of my ability, but I'll need your help in getting started.

One thing is certain, this movie will be a sleeper. Only those who are familiar with DragonLance and visit this website will know of it's existence (I myself stumbled on this website purely by chance). If there's any hope for success and the oppurtunity for a live action movie, we MUST get more involved in it's promotion.

Hmm. Fair points, but I doubt it would work. Aside anything else, if it did work and lots of people went to buy the film, n then it was as crap as most people on here are expecting it to be, people would distrust anything we ever said ever again lol.

Has anyone on here actually asked for more information? Like, whoever it was that said this website could be the official one, have they not been contacted with a, "hey, give us some information or u can f*ck off and make ur own official website"?

I started a group on facebook. I've got a pretty extensive friedn's list, and I'm going to invite all of them, and spread the word that way. I'll get all the pictures up that are on here, release dates, gen con info, etc...

search for dragonlance movie info.

First off, Congratulations Lamassu!! I will be looking forward to seeing what you can whip up for us, but family comes first. Get with me when you have time and we'll discuss whats best for the first posters...

Meta - I understand what you're saying, and dont completely disagree with you, but I am not the idle type. The movie might suck goat eggs, but then again it might not. Either way, it is out of my control. What matters to Paramount is the money. What matters to me is getting enough support to warrant a live action remake. In order to do that we have to build a respectable fan-base. Look at the significant difference between the animated "Hobbit" and LotR trilogy. It CAN be done if our voices are loud enough.

For those of you that wish to help, getting the word out is the best place to start. Thank you all who have responded so far, both for and against. This is our creative brainstorming phase. By the end of this month we'll have teasers, posters and flyers ready to be released into the unsuspecting public.

James - Brilliant start! I love the site, keep it up. :)

DragonTat - You are our official voice in the UK. I will get you some materials as they become available. Until then - just start spreading the love!

Sirch - I do not believe I have had the honour of being smited by your disaproval! I will take this as a good sign. I do have one favour to ask of you if possible - As we are going to be spreading the word of this website, I would appreciate it if you monitor the weekly hits and let me know of any significant change... I will use this as a quasi counter of our success.

I'm not sure exactly how youTube works. But I know a trend is starting to arise, if not already, that corporations are using youTube to get the word out on their products.

If we need to contact someone over at youTube, or just spam the movie clip with devoted fans from here and other dragonlance websites, youTube would offer free advertising and is a worldwide... not sure what you would call it. But you get the idea.

Haven't read all the posts yet in this thread. But another place to put posters would be in bookstores.

*edit*
I know a lot of people wouldn't like this... but!
Maybe get someone or a group of people to split up and post on gaming websites info of the upcoming movie and also maybe link to the trailer. World of Warcraft, LotR Online, etc... post on their forums about it?

i know james already covered facebook (btw james whats the group called so i can search it) but are there ways to maybe hit myspace...i dont have an account there so i have no clue....it wouldn't hurt to draw in all the younger fantasy lovers from LOTR and harry potter....

maybe finding a way to advertise on other fantasy websites could spread the word....our best chances of advertizing will be through people who like the genre....not random people....

local billboards are good too (i was surprised to see how many people actually read those things....like "attention all fantasy enthusiasts..." i have no experience in advertising but it works for carwashes....

also small movie reviews via the internet (IMDB comments on other movies- would you see the dragonlance movie?- they already gave us a shout out for being the official site) or local papers is a great way of spreading the word....that one will have to wait until its released but itll up sales....

just a few of my random ideas but they might do some good...maybe

i'm not entirely against the idea,i just dunno if we can get enough positive response to make the movie(or Dragonlance in general)more popular.but u never know maybe one day a hardcore fan will come along and have a go at making the live action movie.hey thats how LotR got started, and not everyone was keen on that idea when Peter Jackson decided to do it.
there isnt a lot i can do but i'm on a few fantasy forums and i have a Bebo account so if we do get this thing going i'll spread the word, for what good it will do

Sorry to keep spamming this post, but Ive made a very very quick banner for websites and the like, with the site address on using one of the magazine shots of tanis. However, due to (C), I dont want to post it and get sued.
So, where do I go from here? Can I get into trouble using one of these shots? If not, I'll post it here, perhaps someone can brighten it up a little (I wanted to add runes around the border but it wouldnt download properly) and maybe even print some off to hand out somewhere.
Anyway, I'll put it on deviant art (more advertising)and people can download it from there, as soon as someone lets me know about the copyright issue.
