The group is stumbling through the forest. Caramon is in the lead, with Raistlin following. The rest are all behind them.
FLINT
Why aren't they chasing us?
TANIS
They don't need to. We are trapped. They've undoubtedly blocked all the exits
from this forest. With the exception of Darken Wood
GOLDMOON
Darken Wood! Is it truly necessary to go that way?
TANIS
It may not be. We'll get a look around from Prayer's Eye Peak.
CARAMON
(off screen)
Tanis!
Tanis runs ahead and sees Caramon holding Raistlin up.
RAISTLIN
I will be all right. But I must rest.
TANIS
We can all use rest.
The group settles down for a brief rest. Tanis goes to Riverwind.
TANIS
You've fought those creatures before, haven't you?
RIVERWIND
In the broken city. It all came back to me when I looked inside the cart and
saw that thing leering at me! At least
at least I know now that I'm not
going insane. Those horrible creatures really do exist-I had wondered sometimes.
TANIS
I can imagine. So these creatures are spreading all over Krynn, unless your
broken city was near here.
RIVERWIND
No. I came into Que-shu out of the east. It was far from Solace, beyond the
Plains of my homeland.
GOLDMOON
(worried about her tribe)
What do you suppose those creatures meant, saying they had tracked you to our
village?
RIVERWIND
Don't worry. The warriors there would deal with them.
GOLDMOON
Riverwind, do you remember what you were going to say?
RIVERWIND
Yes, you are right.
Riverwind looks to Tanis and smiles. Riverwind shows emotional warmth for the first time in this scene.
RIVERWIND
I give my thanks to you, Half-Elven, and to all of you.
(Riverwind looks to the group)
You have saved our lives more than once and I have been ungrateful. But
it's
all so strange!
RAISTLIN
(ominously)
It's going to get stranger.
Wide camera shot of the territory the companions are in. Show the forest, which stretches for miles around them. Show near them, a large mountain peak: Prayer's Eye Peak.
Camera cuts back into the forest where the group is once again walking. Focus on Sturm. He is looking around, a large wrapping around his head where he was injured. Camera cuts to his point of view and the audience sees a white stag looking at him, and then quickly moves away.
STURM
Stop!
The group turns and looks at him.
TANIS
What is it, Sturm?
Sturm puts his hand to his head.
TANIS
I'm sorry, Sturm. I didn't realize you were as sick as this. We can rest. We're
at the foot of Prayer's Eye Peak. I'm going to climb the mountain and see-
STURM
No! Look!
(points into the forest)
See it? The white stag!
Tanis stares in the direction Sturm is pointing.
TANIS
The white stag? Where? I don't-
STURM
There.
Sturm sees the white stag move away, then turn and look at him. Then it moves away again.
STURM
He wants us to follow him. Like Huma!
RIVERWIND
I see no stag of any color.
CARAMON
Head wound. C'mon, Sturm, lie down and rest while-
STURM
You great blithering idiot! With your brains in your stomach, it is just as
well you do not see the stag. You would probably shoot it and cook it! I tell
you this-we must follow it!
Sturm heads off alone in the direction he indicated.
RIVERWIND
(whispering to Tanis)
The madness of the head wound. I have seen it often.
TANIS
I'm not sure.
(speaks to the group, somewhat reluctant)
Though I have not seen the white stag myself, I have been with one who has and
I have followed it, like in the old man's story.
CARAMON
(unbelieving)
You're suggesting we follow an animal we can't even see?
RAISTLIN
(sarcastically)
It would not be the strangest thing we have done. Though, remember, it was the
old man who told the tale of the White Stag and the old man who got us into
this-
TANIS
It was our own choice that got us into this. We could have turned the staff
over to the High Theocrat and talked our way out of the predicament; we've talked
our way out of worse. I say we follow Sturm. He has been chosen, apparently,
just as Riverwind was chosen to receive the staff-
CARAMON
But it's not even leading us in the right direction! You know as well as I do
there are no trails through the western part of the woods. No one ever goes
there.
GOLDMOON
All the better. Tanis said those creatures must have the paths blocked. Maybe
this is a way out. I say we follow the knight.
Goldmoon, accustomed to being obeyed, goes after Sturm. Riverwind follows her, and then so do the others.
The group is walking through the forest. Tas is beside Flint.
TAS
(to himself but aloud)
I wish I could see the stag.
FLINT
Get hit on the head. Although, with you, we probably couldn't tell the difference.
Tanis is up at the front of the group beside Sturm. Sturm stops and looks ahead for a moment. Camera shows a shot of the white stag stopping and nibbling on a bush.
STURM
Rest. We'll rest.
TANIS
Are you all right?
STURM
Fine.
Sturm sits down to rest. Tanis goes back to the others.
TANIS
We're going to rest here. I'm going to have a look north, see what's moving
back on the road to Haven.
RIVERWIND
I'll come with you.
Cut to a scene with Tanis and Riverwind looking out from the forest. They are overlooking a path. There are many Draconians on the path, walking and moving about. Riverwind and Tanis look at each other in silence. Tanis looks in the distance and sees smoke rising. He points this out to Riverwind.
TANIS
Campfires.
RIVERWIND
Many hundred campfires. The fires of war. That is an army encampment.
Cut back to the group. Tanis and Riverwind have returned and presumably explained what they saw.
STURM
So the rumors are confirmed. There is an army to the north.
CARAMON
But what army? Whose? And why? What are they going to attack? No one would send
an army after this staff. Would they?
RAISTLIN
The staff is but part of this. Remember the fallen stars!
FLINT
Children's stories!
RAISTLIN
My stories are not for children. And you would do well to heed my words, dwarf!
STURM
There it is! There's the stag! It is time to go.
Sturm moves out again, and the others quickly gather their things and follow.
