It is still night, and the companions are taking a small rest. Raistlin is visibly tired, and is leaning against a tree gasping for breath. Tanis approaches the group.
TANIS
Wind's switched. There'll be rain by morning. We've got to find shelter. Some
place to rest.
Tas pulls on Tanis's cloak and draws him to the side, away from the group.
TAS
Tanis... We could go by boat. Crystalmir Lake's only a short way. There're caves
on the other side, and it will cut walking time tomorrow.
TANIS
That's a good idea, Tas, but we don't have a boat.
TAS
(grinning)
No problem.
TANIS
(thoughtfully)
The boat's a good idea. You guide. And don't tell Flint. I'll take care of that.
TAS
Right!
Rejoins the others.
TAS
(to the group)
Follow me.
As the group begins moving again, Riverwind glances around at the others, still not trusting them. Caramon and Sturm approach Tanis.
CARAMON
I don't think he trusts us.
TANIS
Would you?
STURM
What's the plan?
TANIS
We're going by boat.
CARAMON
(chuckling)
Oh, ho! Told Flint yet?
TANIS
No. Leave that to me.
STURM
(suspicious)
Where are we getting the boat?
TANIS
You'll be happier not knowing.
Sturm looks to Tas up ahead.
STURM
(frowning)
I don't like this, Tanis. First we're murderers, now we're about to become thieves.
CARAMON
I don't consider myself a murderer. Goblins don't count.
Sturm glares at Caramon. Sturm is upset that Caramon's code of ethics and morals doesn't match his. Tanis steps in to defuse a potential argument.
TANIS
I don't like any of this, Sturm. But it's a matter of necessity. Look at the
Plainsmen... pride's the only thing keeping them on their feet. Look at Raistlin...
Camera focuses on Raistlin, who is leaning on his staff as he walks. Raistlin coughs.
CARAMON
Tanis is right. Raist can't take much more of this. I must go to him.
Caramon catches up with Raistlin.
CARAMON
Let me help you, Raist.
Raistlin, proud, shakes his head and pulls away from Caramon. Caramon walks by his side anyway.
TANIS
Why does he put up with that?
STURM
Family. Ties of blood.
TANIS
Come on. We're dropping behind.
Tas appears from the shadows.
TAS
The trail runs a little over a mile to the lake. I'll meet you where it comes
out.
Tas runs off into the forest. Flint approaches Tanis as they walk.
FLINT
Where's the kender going?
TANIS
Tas is meeting us at the lake.
FLINT
(eyes wide in alarm)
Lake? What lake?
TANIS
There's only one lake around here, Flint. Come on. We'd better keep going.
Tanis and Sturm move up ahead to catch up to the others. Flint pushes past Sturm to get close to Tanis.
FLINT
I thought we were just going to lie low in the woods for a while.
TANIS
We're going by boat.
FLINT
(growling)
Nope! I'm not getting in any boat!
TANIS
(exasperated)
That accident happened ten years ago! Look, I'll make Caramon sit still.
FLINT
Absolutely not! No boats. I took a vow.
Sturm approaches the two.
STURM
(to Tanis, whispering)
Tanis. Lights.
Tanis turns around. There are lights glittering through the trees behind them.
TANIS
Blast!
Runs up to the rest of the group.
TANIS
Lights! I'm afraid we're going to have to move faster, Caramon...
Caramon has his arm around Raistlin now, supporting him.
CARAMON
(not worried)
We'll make it.
Raistlin coughs. Sturm catches up to Tanis.
STURM
He won't come, Tanis. Flint's been in mortal fear of boats ever since Caramon
almost accidentally drowned him that time. You weren't there. You didn't see
him after we hauled him out.
TANIS
He'll come. He can't let us youngsters go off into danger without him.
Sturm shakes his head, unconvinced. The group stops walking.
CARAMON
We're here.
