The companions are staring out at the black expanse of Crystalmir Lake. There are two moons in the sky, a silver one in the sky and a red one that is just rising.
TANIS
Where's Tas?
CARAMON
There, I think.
Caramon points to a boat floating close to shore, with the outline of someone inside it.
STURM
(irritated)
What wonderful targets we're going to make.
The boat begins to approach shore.
FLINT
(horrified)
You're going to put all of us in one boat! You're mad half-elf!
TANIS
It's a big boat.
FLINT
No! I won't go. If it were one of the legendary white-winged boats of Tarsis,
I still wouldn't go! I'd rather take my chances with the Theocrat!
TANIS
(to Sturm)
Get everyone loaded up. We'll be along in a moment.
STURM
Don't take to long. Listen.
Sounds of people approaching in the distance, and whistles blowing.
TANIS
I can hear. Go on.
Sturm approaches the rest of the group.
GOLDMOON
What are those sounds?
STURM
Goblin search parties. Those whistles keep them in contact when they're separated.
They're moving into the woods now.
Riverwind says something to Goldmoon in their language.
GOLDMOON
(sharply)
Riverwind, gue-lando!
Riverwind stalks off towards the boat, obviously rebuked for what he said. Goldmoon sighs.
STURM
Can I do anything to help, lady?
GOLDMOON
No. He rules my heart, but I am his ruler. Once, when we were young, we thought
we could forget that. But I have been 'Chieftain's Daughter' too long.
STURM
Why doesn't he trust us?
GOLDMOON
He has all the prejudices of our people. The Plainsmen do not trust those who
are not human. Tanis cannot hide his elven blood beneath a beard. Then there
are the dwarf, the kender.
STURM
And what of you, lady? Why do you trust us? Don't you have these same prejudices?
GOLDMOON
When I was a girl, I was princess of my people. I was a priestess. They worshipped
me as a goddess. I believed in it. I adored it. Then something happened...
(falls silent)
STURM
What was that?
GOLDMOON
(looking to Riverwind's back)
I fell in love with a shepherd.
Goldmoon walks towards the boat, leaving Sturm with that.
Riverwind wades into the water and helps Tas bring the boat to shore.
RAISTLIN
(to Caramon)
I can't get my feet wet.
Caramon nods and lifts his brother in his arms. He puts Raistlin in the boat, and Raistlin goes to the side of the boat and huddles himself in his robes, not a word to his brother.
CARAMON
(to Riverwind)
I'll hold her steady. You get in.
Riverwind does so. Caramon helps Goldmoon into the boat and she and Riverwind sit near Tas. Sturm arrives and Caramon turns to him.
CARAMON
What's happening back there?
STURM
Flint says he'll burn before he'll get in a boat... at least then he'll die
warm instead of wet and cold.
CARAMON
I'll go up and haul him down here.
STURM
You'd only make things worse. You were the one who nearly drowned him, remember?
Let Tanis handle it... he's the diplomat.
They watch Tanis and Flint talk, and then shake hands.
STURM
I told Tanis the dwarf wouldn't come.
CARAMON
Stubborn as a dwarf, so the old saying goes. And that one's had one hundred
and forty-eight years to grow stubborner. Well, we'll miss him, that's for certain.
He's saved my life more than once. Let me go get him. One punch on the jaw and
he won't know whether he's in a boat or his own bed.
Tanis arrives as Caramon finishes his sentence.
TANIS
No, Caramon. Flint would never forgive us. Don't worry about him. He's going
back to the hills. Get in the boat. There are more lights coming this way. We
left a trail through the forest a blind gully dwarf could follow.
Caramon holds the side of the boat.
CARAMON
No sense all of us getting wet. You and Sturm get in. I'll shove off.
Sturm gets in, followed by Tanis. Caramon wades into the water to his knees and is about to push off.
FLINT
(behind the group)
Hold it!
Flint comes running towards them.
FLINT
Hang on! I'm coming!
TANIS
Stop! Caramon! Wait for Flint!
STURM
Look!
Sturm points to the forest behind Flint as goblins begin to emerge from the trees.
TANIS
Goblins, Flint! Behind you! Run!
Flint begins running hard.
TANIS
I'll cover him.
Tanis pulls out his bow and arrows. He loads up an arrow and fires one. It hits a goblin and it falls to the ground, dead. The other goblins begin arming their own bows. Tanis gets another arrow ready. Flint reaches the shore.
FLINT
Wait! I'm coming!
Flint goes into the water and sinks like a stone.
STURM
Grab him! Tas, row back. There he is! See?
Caramon sees where Flint is thrashing around and moves to get him. Tas begins rowing backwards. Tanis shoots another arrow but misses. He loads another. Lots of goblins begin coming out of the trees towards them. Caramon gets a struggling Flint.
CARAMON
I've got him! Quit struggling.
An arrow hits Caramon in the back and sticks into his chainmail.
CARAMON
That does it!
Caramon heaves Flint towards the boat and Flint lands in it. An arrow hits the side of the boat and sticks there.
TANIS
Row back to Caramon, Tas!
TAS
I can't!
Sturm takes Tas's place and rows the boat towards Caramon. Tanis helps Caramon into the boat.
TANIS
(to Sturm)
Pull!
Sturm begins to row with all his might as the boat pulls away. Arrows fly all around the group.
CARAMON
(to Tanis)
Goblin target practice tonight. We show up beautifully against the water.
Caramon pulls the arrow out of his chainmail. Raistlin stands up.
TANIS
Take cover!
Caramon reaches for Raistlin but Raistlin scowls at him. He reaches into a pouch and pulls out some sand. Arrows fly all around, but Raistlin doesn't notice as he is concentrating on casting a spell.
RAISTLIN
Ast tasarak sinuralan krynawi.
Raistlin lets the sand fall between his fingers to the boat's floor. He then moves his hand in an arc towards the goblins on the shore. One by one, the goblins drop their bows and fall over.
CARAMON
Good work, little brother!
Raistlin blinks and then falls forward, into his brother's arms. Casting the spell has drained him and he coughs.
RAISTLIN
(weakly)
I'll be all right.
He sits down.
TANIS
What did you do to them?
RAISTLIN
I put them to sleep. And now I must rest.
Raistlin sinks back against the side of the boat. Riverwind, who is beside Goldmoon, notices she is cold.
RIVERWIND
(to Goldmoon)
Take my cape.
GOLDMOON
No. You have been suffering from the fever. I never get sick, you know that.
But...you may put your arm around me, warrior. The heat from our bodies will
warm us both.
Goldmoon smiles.
RIVERWIND
(teasing)
Is that a royal command, Chieftain's Daughter?
GOLDMOON
It is.
Goldmoon leans against Riverwind's body. As she does so she looks to the stars. She sits up in shock.
RIVERWIND
What is it?
The others all look to the sky as well. Caramon pokes Raistlin.
CARAMON
Raist, what is it? I don't see anything.
Raistlin removes his hood and coughs. He looks to the sky and is shocked. He reaches out to Tanis as he begins coughing again. He coughs for a few seconds and then it passes.
RAISTLIN
(wheezing)
Tanis... The constellations...
TANIS
What? What about the constellations?
RAISTLIN
Gone!
Raistlin has another coughing fit, and then uses his hand to wipe his mouth. Blood is wiped from his lips on to his hand.
RAISTLIN
The constellation known as the Queen of Darkness and the one called Valiant
Warrior. Both gone. She has come to Krynn, Tanis, and he has come to fight her.
All the evil rumors we have heard are true. War, death, destruction...
(has another coughing fit)
Caramon holds Raistlin.
CARAMON
C'mon, Raist. Don't get so worked up. It's only a bunch of stars.
Tanis looks to the sky.
TANIS
Only a bunch of stars...
The boat sails off into the distance.
