SCENE 9 INT. CAVE

The cave is dark and gloomy.

TAS
(looking around the cave)
Nice home. Not much in the way of furniture.

TANIS
(grinning)
It will do for the night. I don't think even the dwarf will complain about this. If he does, we'll send him back to sleep in the boat!

Tas smiles back at Tanis's joke. Caramon enters the cave carrying Raistlin. Riverwind is in the center of the cave starting a fire. Raistlin is placed near the fire and Caramon covers him with his cloak. Raistlin is very weak, and his coughing fits bring up blood to his lips. Goldmoon kneels beside him with a cup in her hand. Tanis joins her.

GOLDMOON
Can you drink this?

Raistlin shakes his head and then coughs again. Very weak, too weak to talk.

GOLDMOON
(turning to Tanis)
Perhaps-my staff?

RAISTLIN
(choking, voice in a whisper)
No. The staff will not heal me, Tanis. Do not waste it on me. If it is a blessed artifact…its sacred power is limited. My body was my sacrifice…for my magic. This damage is permanent. Nothing can help…

Raistlin closes his eyes.

In the cave, Flint is shivering with cold as Tas gives him a cup to drink. Sturm approaches Tanis.

STURM
(in a bad mood)
I'll take the first watch.

Sturm leaves the cave.

Tanis looks around and sees Tas seated going through various objects. Tanis sees a ring Tas is fondling. Tanis goes to him.

TANIS
Tas…my ring…

TAS
(innocence on his face)
Is it? Is this yours? I'm glad I found it. You must have dropped it at the Inn.

Tanis takes his ring back with a smile and sits beside Tas.

TANIS
Have you got a map of this area, Tas?

TAS
A map? Yes, Tanis. Of course.

Tas brings out a group of maps and goes through them.

TAS
I thought you knew every tree personally around these parts, Tanis.

TANIS
I've lived here many years, but, let's face it, I don't know any of the dark and secret paths.

TAS
You won't find many to Haven.

Tas pulls out a map and unrolls it on the floor. He points to parts as he talks.

TAS
The Haven Road through Solace Vale is quickest, that's for certain.

Tanis studies the map.

TANIS
You're right. The road is not only quickest-it seems to be the only possible route for several miles ahead. Both south and north of us lie the Kharolis Mountains-no passes there.

Tanis rolls up the map and gives it back to Tas.

TANIS
Which is exactly what the Theocrat will figure.

Tas yawns.

TAS
Well, it's a problem that will be solved by wiser heads than mine. I'm along for the fun.

Tas lays down and goes to sleep. Tanis looks around and sees Caramon keeping watch over the sleeping form of Raistlin. Tanis goes to him.

TANIS
Turn in. I'll watch Raistlin.

CARAMON
No. He might need me.

TANIS
But you've got to get some sleep.

CARAMON
I will. Go get some sleep yourself, nursemaid. Your children are fine. Look-even the dwarf is out cold.

TANIS
I don't have to look. The Theocrat can probably hear him snoring in Solace. Well, my friend, this reunion was not much like we planned five years ago.

CARAMON
What is?

Tanis smiles and walks off to sleep.
